The History of the Department

    Originally, at MPEI electric measuring technique was developing at the department of Theoretical fundamentals of electrical engineering (TFEE), where a design group and workshops were created. A number of constructions of high-quality laboratory and industrial instruments were worked out.

    In August 1944 the department of Electric instrument making was separated from the TFEE department and a specialization of the same name was organized. It was founded by:
    - Alexander V. Talitskiy (1898 - 1966);
    - Roman R. Kharchenko (1904 - 1968);
    - Vladimir T. Prytkov (1904 - 1992).

    In 1959 the department was renamed into the Electric measuring technique department, and since 1970 till present its name is Information measuring technique department.

    The heads of department were:
    - from 1944 to 1954 - professor Alexander V. Talitskiy;
    - in 1954 - professor Roman R. Kharchenko;
    - from 1955 to 1958 - professor Nickolai N. Shumilovskiy;
    - from 1958 to 1971 - professor Mark I. Levin;
    - from 1971 to 1996 - professor Vitalii N. Malinovskiy;
    - from 1996 till present - professor Igor N. Zhelbakov.

    For more than a fifty-year history the department's type has been changing essentially. At first it implied calculation, planning and investigation of dynamics of electromechanical electric measuring instruments and theory of measuring trestles and compensators. Then the accent was moved onto analog electronic measuring apparatuses, as well as onto theory and practice of measuring converters. In 1970-s the department generally switched to digital measuring tools and its components. The most important milestone of the recent years is an organic combination of measurement and computation: microprocessor tools of measurement, signals digital processing, intellectual sensors, virtual measuring instruments, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters.
